NANDAN KANAN WILD LIFE SANCTUARY

White Tigers in Nandan KananSet amidst the Chandaka forests in Khurda and located just 13 kms from Bhubaneshwar, Nandan Kanan wildlife sanctuary was established in 1979. It is in fact a fusion of an animal zoo, a botanical garden, and an amusement park. Nandankanan wildlife sanctuary is known for housing 67 kinds of mammals, 18 varieties of reptiles and 81 species of birds.Some of the endangered species such as Asiatic Lion, Three Indian Crocodilies, Sangal Liontailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Indian Pangolin and Mouse Deer can be found at Nandankanan Wildlife Sanctuary. Tigers and White Gharials are the main inhabitants of the sanctuary.

The sanctuary spread across an area of 4.4 sq. km is situated along the banks of Kanjia Lake. The park is set in a beautiful natural setting and is one of the finest parks in the country with natural enclosures unlike other conventional zoos. It has an open Lion Safari and first zoo in the world, where Gharials are bred in captivity. The species shown in varying habitats give a good introduction to the range and diversity of India’s fauna.

The Nanda Kanan wild life sanctuary is world-renowned for its white tigers. In 1980, for the very first time, three white tiger cubs were born from normal colored parents. From then on a successful white tiger breeding program has been undertaken in the zoo that has resulted in an increase in the white tiger population to 39. From then on it has gone to house the largest numbers of white tigers in India.The Nandan Kanan national park also houses the very first captive Gharial breeding centre of the country. Other animals found here include the Asiatic lion, Nilgiri langur etc. The wide variety of wild animals found in Nandan Kanan along with make it a must visit place in every tourist’s menu who is on Orissa tourism.

Endangered species such as the Asiatic Lion, three Indian crocodilians, sangai lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, India pangolin, mouse deer and countless birds, reptiles and fish have been breeding successfully at Nandankanan. Some of the other attractions of Nandankanan are the 34 aquaria, which are home to a large variety of fresh water fishes. The Reptile Park's cave like entrance is guarded by a life-size tyrannosaurus. Inside, numerous species of crocodiles, lizards, turtles and snakes share the park with natural ease.
