One of the ancient temples of Orissa, the Khambeswari Temple is a dated to as far as 5th century A.D. and is also one of the most highly revered shrine at Sonpur. It was built by the Chauhan ruler, Rajaraja Singh. The temple enshrines an idol of Goddess Khambeswari in the form of Vana Durga. Earliest reference of the Goddess is found in the Tarasinga copper plates of Maharaja Trustikara of 5th century AD. This temples of Orissa is also known for its beautiful carvings, most important of them being the ten lady figures carved exquisitely in one panel, on the door of Garbh Griha.
